What You Will learn

In your initial class, we'll help you become comfortable with the pottery wheel and emphasize the fundamental skill of clay centering. Depending on your progress, mastering this step may take a few sessions or a bit longer.

As you advance into the second and third classes, you'll delve deeper into pottery techniques, including trimming your pieces and refining your ability to craft cylinders. These foundational skills set the stage for your creative exploration.

In the third or fourth class, you'll have the chance to explore timing and glazing, adding depth and artistic flair to your pottery creations. Our structured program ensures that you receive comprehensive support at every stage.

Handbuilding Lesson Plan

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
Over the three class periods the goal for students to is to create one medium sized piece
(or two small pieces) that uses hand building techniques such as coiling or slab work. The
purpose of this class is to refine handbuilding techniques and for students to gather
inspiration from shape and use that to create either a sculpture or a functional piece
(mugs, vases, bowls etc.)

Day 1
1. Discuss what inspires us visually, art, nature, architecture etc.
2. Demo handbuilding techniques (Slab, Coil, Pinch, Score, Slip)
3. 1 on 1 with students to work with them on their ideas and create a game plan on
how to create their design using the handbuilding techniques
4. Start creating work

Day 2
1. 1 on 1 with students to discuss how they are doing with their piece, troubleshoot
any issues and encourage
2. Demo trimming/texture that can be incorporated into students work
3. Have work finished by end of day ( have students work bisque fired inbetween
day 2 and 3)

Day 3
1. Discuss glaze options and ideas
2. Demo underglaze/glazing techniques (diping, brushing, pouring, wax resist)
3. Glaze work!
